Promoting seaweed cultivation among women in Ramnad

TNRTP conducted a Convergence meeting to promote women-led enterprises in seaweed cultivation on 30.06.2021 in Ramnad at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Ramnad. A resolution was taken by the Dept of Fisheries, CMFRI and TNRTP for the benefit of the Women-led Individual and Enterprise Group (EG). It was decided that TNRTP would provide a 100% loan of( Rs 10,000-Rs 15000)per Individual, of which 60% will be subsidised by the Fisheries dept. Mother seeds for cultivation and also training will be given to Fisher Women by CMFRI. Then, The Business plan will be approved by CMFRI. When the seeds are cultivated, marketing support and other biz-related linkages will be provided by all converging parties – TNRTP, CMFRI and Fisheries dept.

Initially, One village from Ramnad will be chosen for a Pilot study where the new mother seeds will be distributed to the EGs. In less than 2 months, TNRTP will identify and select EGs from Seashore villages within the district for seaweed cultivation. T. Elamvaluthi, Deputy Director, Dept of Fisheries; Dr.R.
